Sania turns 19...

Sania turns 19..

The country turns crazy..News channels give this 'extra' bit to the already too much focus on her.. They dedicate hour long shows in her name, giving all kinds of weird info and admiration towards her.

Result: Makes the people who truly appreciate her game, are at their wits end, and start getting irritated even at the mention of her name…

I sit in front of the TV, switching between news channels, when I come across this show..
The news channel introduces her as "Emerging tennis star and a fashion icon!"

20% of the show gives details about all her achievements in the world of tennis..( though there might not be many for a girl who is jus in the process of rising to fame in her GAME! and her achievements are quite marvellous for her age.. )
80% was absolute crap stuff which might cause undue irritation to any damn viewer…

Theres a scrollbar running at the bottom with birthday wishes from so many people around the country...Advertisement statistics, as to how 'Brand Sania' grew from Rs 5 lacs to Rs 1 crore in less than a year…

How her brand value is right next to Sachin Tendulkar currently..
How she is 'the' inspiration to people of this country..
(Were there NO OTHER achievers in this country?!? Jus to name one...What about Narain Karthikeyan who had to struggle to even get a sponsor for his sport… HE is also the only one to make India proud in the racing world...)

There were even top fashion designers brought into the show, wherein they were asked about Sania's dressing sense.. And each damn person spent so much time in commenting about the pinks and the blues which she should be wearing or jeans with glitters! HolyCrap!!! Another one exclaiming that she should carry her on-court dresses off-court too…?!!??

And finally one sensible designer, when he was repeatedly asked about how she shud dress, said that shes a tennis star, and it would be better if she concentrates on her game and play good tennis and it is highly irrelevant as to what designer clothes she wears….

( Why are the news channels interested as to how Sania should dress????? I simply fail to understand...)
Wow! So sania gets fashion designers' expert views for her, on television absolutely free, even without she asking for it..!!!! She surely cannot be blamed for all this...

Then they a girl on the show who has played with Sania in her training classes.. She also being a real good tennis player.. And the kind of questions which were asked put off that poor thing… Inviting a person who plays as well as Sania but jus not being lucky enough to make it big, and asking them as to how Sania's popularity inspired them was totally ridiculous…

And the girl finally exclaimed that her popularity has actually made life tough for them all… Her sister happened to win the $10,000 International level tennis tournament in Pune and that jus occupied an extremely small column in some local newspaper… ( yeah.. truth!!! And even if sania sneezes, it is made known to the whole country!)

Sania exclaims that theres a difference between attitude and arrogance… And what she is made of, I don’t want to debate.. As long as she continues to make the nation proud with her game

And one can never blame her, as for a 19 year old, so much of media hype and attention surely does something!

well less said the better about sania mania. touchwood. the last u want is her totally going the kournikova way. hope she does play on for more yrs and acheives a lot.

somethin on the lines of sharapova, who manages both her on / off court life .

and as far as the media. bloody hell with them. lost even the tiniest of faith for them, ( i do remember once a player called avishkar salvi from bombay who was likend to mcgrath and now god knows where he is

FYI: She has received lotsa oppurtunities for acting in films. I think its the media that is creating all these false images.

sania(n) is hogging too much of limelight.noone recognised rajyavardhan rathore's triumph in an overseas shooting championship after athens.moreover narain's not getting his share of attention.noone recognised armaan ebrahim's(a 16 yr old racer frm chennai.pls note--16) triumph in formula BMW.even joshan chinnappa(squash)has been left in the lurch.someone said tht tamilnadu has a backward image because of its proximity to andhra.quite true!

Sania is doing good on the court. That's the only thing that matters. She should just try to keep doing her best and getting better at her game.

As for the media, it's just hungry to pander to the sentiments of the common-folk. All it wants is a scoop; if the TRP goes up, just do it! If Sania is the flavor of the month, get her to be the editor for a Newspaper, invite her to a game show, mediate birthday messages on national television, and so on. (Has anyone thought of inviting her to write a guest blog item!). But, quoting Persephone, 'These things are not meant to last'.

Many icons who fail to meet the expectations set upon them are lost in the sands of time. Only those who sustain their performance for considerable period become legends. The media is a hungry beast, waiting for its next big prey. Remember the movie 'Chicago'... they are just fair-weather friends.

Sania, as long as she keeps doing her job well...she has a waiver to wear an attitude she wants.

True.. Sania gets way too much attention.. there are others like Narain Karthikeyan and Vishwanathan Anand, who though being champions in their own game harldy get their dues.. I remember an article somewhere comparing a growing woman chess player to her.. (see, I dont even know her name coz that was probably the only article she was featured in!).. actually it is time for the media to grow up and someone shud talk some sense in to them..

yes, this sucks... bday wishes!!!... (and the same happens to cine stars...)...the media is there to hype up and when the player performs so badly, everthing is against her....

does anyone know of the boxing champion from manipur "Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom" -- she won gold in asian and world championships... not like sania in the top 30, but THE top!!!!

and to name another sport -- archery.... and another one, squash -- where we have people like joshna chinnappa who won the british junior open and other 15-19 yrs old boys and girls who have the talent to perform at international level... there are so many sports in india where we have the talent but no sponsors...

narain karthikeyan came up by his own means and now he may not get a chance next year!!... and chess is another field, that is popular but still not to the level of sachin and sania...

its a pity that cricket and now tennis is taking the stage... but am happy that its not ALL cricket now... slowly other sports are picking up...

sorry for the long comment :-)

Even if she's arrogant, has weird attitude or is getting that extra bit of attention, money, or even fashion tips... I feel she deserves it, every bit of it. Yes she does...! Go Sania go...!

This is really getting over the top these days...

This madam has to first work on her serve before she endorses/gives statements about anything else... She can put a brake on all those ads, and get that damn serve right!

And mother of all ironies, the HP ad that screams "great service is what we're known for"... Wonder what HP did to itself, making such a derogatory remark about its own service too!

Grrr! How I hate the mania by itself, and the appearance of the term "Sania mania" in every other page of every newspaper/website/magazine etc etc!

Girish said...

sure do feel that some of the adulation is unwarranted and stems out of reasons outside of the tennis domain.. about these, the less said the better.
Frankly, makkaL purinjukka maattengaraanga that these infinite laudatory whatevers wil only nip the bud and in all probability stem her growth.. paavam.
The media is responsible for half the careers that go wrong... Screw the media.

Just my 2 paise.
cheers.

I agree with your point of view that she is being given more than required attention. But by writing about her you have unknowingly added to her fame by writing about her. She has a long way before she can even be considered for the One of India's best sportsperson. Doing well for one year in the tennis world is not great. For that matter I would consider Anju Bobby George or Joshna Chinnappa to be better than her. All this attention is beacuse of glamour more than her tennis abilities.

@nithya
HP ad.. LOL.. and 'Sania Mania'.. same reaction... aaaarrrgggghhhh
@girish
thanks for stoppin by.. :) and true! media causes destruction of careers of many due to the undue hype...
@vivek
yeah.. but i was highly elated to see that a lot of ppl agree wid me, in this issue.. :) and glamour has ofcourse been the most important thing for this media drooling..
